Kobe Bryant is mad with the Lakers' pending trade of Lamar Odom to Dallas for $8.9 million. With Lamar Odom leaving, Pau Gasol could be out the door, as well, leading the Lakers' to possibly picking up Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard. The Lakers' organization believe Odom was not fully committed to the organization but more to his reality star wife and reality television show. Kobe Bryant and other players, as well, disagree with this statement because Odom had his best season yet last year with the Lakers' winning the Sixth Man Award and playing to his full capability. Personally, I believe the Lakers' are not thinking this through and are making mistakes by giving up Lamar Odom and possibly Pau Gasol. Only time will tell if the Lakers made the right decision.

The New Look Big East
This past week, the Big East Conference added the teams it need to keep it as a viable conference with automatic BCS qualifying status. Boise State and San Diego State have to be added to the Big East for football, along with Houstion, UCF, SMU, and possibly Navy competing in other Big East sports. What is interesting about the new look Big East is how nationalized it is becoming with teams coming from all over the country. This could create a good market for television networks. We will see in the future if the Big East can be an elite conference, because it has failed in the past to becoming one.

Could Tebow be the NFL MVP??
People believe that Tim Tebow is the NFL's Most Valuable Player, as of now. Yet this is an opinion, when Tebow took over the Broncos were 1-4 and now they are 7-5. I believe without Tim Tebow, the Broncos would still be losers. Yes, his total QBR (Quarterback Rating) is 31st in the league, behind Kyle Orton (who the Broncos let go) and Donovan McNabb (who currently is out of a job), the only other people who are in front of him are Philip Rivers (who is playing terrible) and Tarvais Jackson (enough said). Tebowmania is spreading like wild fire and will continue no matter if the Broncos win/lose. Players on the Broncos are buying into Tebow's positive upbeat beliefs and it really shows on the field. You can say he isn't an NFL quarterback and doesn't or won't ever compare to players like Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, but it comes down to one thing WINNING. Tim Tebow is winning game after game in tough situatuons and is surpassing one of the Broncos predecessors, John Elway, in his first year of play. He will just have to see in weeks to come if Tebow will continue this hype.

Celtics Interested in Chris Paul
The Boston Celtics are looking in trading Rajon Rondo for the New Orleans Hornets star, Chris Paul. Chris Paul is considered one of the best point guards in the NBA and for the trade to be of an equal match the Celtics would have to give up Rondo. The Hornets aren't thrilled about this trade with the Celtics because Rondo still has four years and $50 million left on his contract, and in order to the Hornets to sign off the deal the team would have to get a third party involved to pick up younger players. Finally, Chris Paul doesn't come cheap. He is due for $16 million in the 2011-2012 season. If the Celtics were to give up Rondo, they would be getting a great player in Paul. I believe this would be a fair trade between the two teams because of the players superstar ability. If this trade happens the Celtics would continue to be a dominant force in the NBA.

Lawrence Taylor hit with a sex trafficking lawsuit
Hall of fame Giant, Lawrence Taylor, was slammed with a sex trafficking lawsuit on Monday filed by the girl who was forced to prostitute herself to LT last year. The suit accuses Taylor of ignoring the bruises on the face of the 16-year old girl who arrived to Lawrence Taylor's New York motel last year. Taylor than tried to pursue sexual acts with Cristina Ferro, who was beaten by her pimp moments before. LT, 52, was originally charged with statutory rape, but then pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct in March. This whole situation, I believe, is very disturbing. It does not matter if he was a former super star or not, he deserves jail time for what he did to the minor. This isn't the first time Taylor has had a run in with the law, he used to be addicted to crack. Only time will tell his verdict.

West A Alum to fill Quarterback Position
Some remember Tyler Palko as the University of Pittsburgh quarterback, but I remember watching Tyler Palko play for our high school almater West Allegheny. I was about 9 years old when I remember watching Tyler play and just saw how amazing that team was in 2001. West Allegheny made it to the WPIAL championship and beat rival Hopewell, then finally to a State Championship victory. From there Tyler went to Pitt and had a so-so two years at the University. It was great to see Palko start for the Kansas City Chiefs last night and finally represent West Allegheny. Even though, they played the Patriots and Tyler threw three interceptions I believed he played okay. The Chiefs do not have an easy rest of the season either, with the Steelers this week and the Bears upcoming as well. Good luck Tyler, making West A proud!

Sid the Kid is Back!!!!!
Sidney Crosby will be returning to the ice tonight against the New York Islanders. This will be the 2007 NHL MVP's first game in a year. Crosby hasn't played since he sustained concussions in consecutive games in January. The last ten months have been stressful on the star, but he needed to take his time with the concussions. On Sunday he was cleared to play, and since then there has been play-off buzz around the city of Pittsburgh. Lets Go Pens!!!!!

Roethlisberger with Fractured Thumb
I was very surprised to find out that Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger suffered a fractured thumb against the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday. Watching the whole game last week I did not see Big Ben break his thumb or be in distress after he did break it. The broken thumb is on his throwing and he was unaware that he broke it, as well, but knew it came during the second half of the football game. Ben has played with a fractured thumb before and can handle the adversity that comes with it. The Steelers beat the Bengals last week, 24-17, and have an overall record of 7-3. Luckily, the Steelers have a bye-week this week and Big Ben will be able to rest his injured thumb. I see no problem with Ben playing Kansas City on November 27.

Paterno's name taken off the Big Ten Championship Trophy
More sad news from Happy Valley. The Big Ten Conference has taken Joe Paterno's name off the Big Ten's championship trophy. Jim Delany, commissioner of the Big Ten stated on Monday that it was "inappropriate" to keep Paterno's name on the trophy, which will awarded December 3rd after the Big Ten title game. The trophy was named the Stagg-Paterno Championship trophy, but now will take on its new name, the Stagg Championship trophy. It is sad to see this happen to a man who did so much for Penn State University. He wasn't just the face of athletics at Penn State, he was the face of the University. Penn State is not out of the fire yet, it will be a long time before this situation is resolved. I can't wait to see what will happen in the weeks to come.

Penn State Did the Right Thing
Over the course of this week, the main news topic was the sexual abuse charges brought upon former Penn State defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, and the firing of head coach Joe Paterno. Joe Paterno was let go, Wednesday Novemeber 9th after earlier in the day he told the press he would retire after the season was over. I believe the Penn State Board of Trustees did the right thing with letting "Joe Pa" go. Having Paterno coach this weekend against Nebraska would have not been good, the Nebraska fans would have scruntized the coach and the players immensly. Yes, Joe Paterno has been at Penn State since the sixties and is considered the best collegiate football coach of all time, but all these allegations against the University will tarnish Paternos legacy. This incident could be compared to the University of Pittsburgh problems last year when newly hired head coach, Mike Heyward, was accussed of beating his wife. Yes, what Heyword did was wrong and is compareable to the Penn State scandal but Pitt handled the problem ASAP and did the right thing by not making a big deal about it or not even giving the chance for Heyward to speak. The University of Pittsburgh handled everything swiftly and properly throughtout their problems and I believe Penn State should do the same. There is no need for protest or all this unneeded attention that the Penn Staters are giving the public. All of Penn Staters need to admit that Joe Paterno was wrong and he didnt do the right thing, morally, and also man up because this problem is bigger than Joe Paterno. The school's legacy and athletics will be forever tarnished and not to mention the lives of those who were abused will never be the same. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families.

Floyd Mayweather to pay for Joe Frazier's funeral
This past week boxing has lost one of the greatest fighters of all time, Joe Frazier. Joe Frazier was the first boxer to beat Muhammad Ali in 1971 and to obtain the Heavy Weight Champion Title from Ali. Frazier, who was 67, died of cancer. With great admiration and love for the former Heavy Weight Champion, defending WBC welter-weight champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has agreed to pay for Frazier's funeral. Mayweather issued this statement via Twitter, "My condolences go out to the late great Joe Frazier. TheMoneyteam will pay for his Funeral Services". Earlier this year, Mayweather covered funeral costs for Genaro Hernandez, who Mayweather fought and obtained his first title against.
I can't believe Floyd Mayweather would pay for Joe Frazier's funeral cost. This is one of the most selfless acts I've seen in the sporting world. It shows Frazier had such an effect on Floyd Mayweather that Mayweather would go above and beyond for the former heavy weight champion. Rest in Peace Smokin' Joe.

Magic Johnson's Shocking Announcement 20 Years Later
Twenty years go, today, Magic Johnson gave his shocking public announcement to the world that he was HIV positive. Before Magic gave his statement his agent Lon Rosen told Johnson to tell the public it was HIV, not AIDS. The crowd was silent and he began to speak these words, "Because of the HIV virus that I have attained, I will have to retire from the Lakers today". Silence was spread throughout the audience and everyone around the world was shocked. This was one of the biggest press conferences in sport. It could be compared to the day John F. Kennedy was shot or when the space shuttle Challenger exploded. This moment left an imprint in American history and sport history. Magic Johnson smiled as he always did in tough moments and was able to control this disease when most people considered it a death threat at the time. It is great to see Magic Johnson still going strong today and being a spokesperson for HIV/AIDS but it is heartbreaking that his disease cut him down in the prime of his career. Hopefully he will continue to live a long, great life.

Russian plane crash was caused by piliot error
The plane crash that wiped out the Russian hockey team a few months ago was caused by a pilot error and the co-pilot was taking an illegal substance. The Yak-42 plane was in "good order" before it crashed September 7th shortly after takeoff from Yaroslavl, Russia. One of the pilots accidentally applied the breaks too early on takeoff which made the plane rise too steeply. It crashed 150 miles away from the airport in Yaroslavl. "Everything was fine with the time of the flight, the weather, and fuel", said an investigator from the Interstate Aviation Committee. To make matters worse the co-pilot of the plane was on phenobarbital, which was found in his blood after the crash. It is sad to see that pilot error was the cause for this horrific crash. If everything was executed correctly and the co-pilot was not on drugs the 44 members of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl ice hockey team would be alive today.

Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian are divorcing
Sport fans should be in shock, NBA player Kris Humphries and his wife, Kim Kardashian, are getting a divorce. Just ten weeks of marriage the two are divorcing due to irreconcilable differences. Kardashian states, "I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I hoped this marriage was forever but things don't worked out as planned". This was the first marriage for 26 year old Humphries and the second for 31 year old Kardashian. The couple's marriage was show on E as a two part television program and had many lavish details. Due to the NBA lockout, Humphries is out of a job but played for the New Jersey Nets last year. Overall, I find this very amusing and funny to say the least. The E network made a big deal of the two and had previews of the big day before it aired on TV. On the show Humphries appeared to be a jerk and very big headed, where Kardashian seemed annoying and unintelligent. Hopefully the two can remain friends and work on their differences.

Paralyzed Rutgers player to lead team onto field
Paralyzed Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand will lead the Scarlet Knights onto the field this Saturday against West Virginia. It will be the first time LeGrand will be joining the team in the tunnel since his tackling accident last year at the Meadowlands. "Can't wait for Saturday, even with this forecast I am still pumped", LeGrand said referring to Saturday's weather forecast. LeGrand serves as an analyst on the Rutgers Radio Network. It is great to see LeGrand back on the field. I hope one day he will be able to walk again and be back to his original self.

Suh Trash Talking During Falcons Game
Suh is claimed to of trashed talked Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan as he was on the ground with a serious knee or ankle injury during this past Sunday's game against the Lions and the Falcons. Falcons wide receiver, Roddy White, and center, Todd McClure, say they heard Suh diss the Falcons quarterback as he was on the ground in pain. McClure states, "I had respect for Suh before the game, but when Matt was on the ground the things he was saying and the trash he was talking was definitely uncalled for". Some find it difficult to believe that Suh did this during a game because he was such a class act on and off the field during his time in Nebraska and in the NFL. Suh has yet to release a statement as to what he said on the field was true or not. I hope that these claims are false and this doesn't happen again. If anyone else has feedback, I would love to hear it!

Raiders' Palmer likely to start immediately
The Oakland Raiders expect Carson Palmer to start for the organization this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. Palmer has not played a down of football since last December. The Raiders picked up the quarterback Tuesday and expect Palmer to play immediately. Oakland needed to replace Jason Campbell after he broke his collar bone against the Cleveland Browns. Kyle Boller replaced Campbell but will be sitting on the bench during this Sunday's game. As a result of this trade, the Cincinnati Bengals received a first round pick for the 2012 draft and either a second or first round pick in the 2013 draft depending on how far the Raiders go in the playoffs. With this requirement, this might be the last time Jason Campbell will be in an Oakland uniform, seeing as he is a free agent after this year. I am glad to see Carson Palmer back in the NFL and i believe he will be a good fit for the Raiders. I believe the Raiders are a contender this year.

Indy Car Racer Killed in Crash
On Sunday, two time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died when his car got caught up in a 15-car pileup at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wheldon's car sailed over another vehicle and smashed into a catch fence during IndyCars season-ending race. Every race car driver goes into a race knowing that this could be their last but hope it will not be. Wheldon was driving from the back of the pack trying to make a move when he drove into the mess of cars weaving in every direction. He was unable to avoid the wreck in front of him and clipped another car, which sent his car airborne and burst into flames as he hit the fence. Drivers could only complete 11 laps of the race before it was over. Two hours later officials pronounced Wheldon dead. The driver was only 33. Officials were worried about aggressive driving in this race because of car speeds up to 225 m.p.h., 34 cars in the race, and a 200 lap course. Besides Wheldon, 3 others were hurt in the pileup. It is sad to see something like this to happen in any sport. Hopefully IndyCar will release the new, safer cars before the 2013 season. May Dan Wheldon rest in peace and may your thoughts and prayers be for the Wheldon family. He leaves behind a wife and two small children.

T.O. attempts suicide
This week's sporting news did not seem to mention the attempted suicide of wide receiver Terrell Owens. Some say the incident should not be a surprise since the star athlete shows drastically changed moods. This was not the first time Owens had try to commit suicide. In 2006, Owens reportedly overdosed on hydrocodone. It is sad to see an athlete like Owens trying to commit such a selfless act. Though after his reality show stints, people may now view this wide receiver as a joke and not to be taken seriously. Terrell Owens will always be remembered for his on and off the field antics, like pulling a pen out of his shoe to sign a football during the game or crying to the press about Tony Romo. Owens was a great wide receiver and had a knack to great the big time play.

Can You Find the Mistake
This past Sunday the Oakland Raiders defeated the Houston Texans 25-20, preventing the Texans to score in the last few minutes of the 4th quarter to go ahead and win the game. Raiders safety Michael Huff picked off Texans quarterback Matt Schaub in the end zone. It was an emotional day for the Raiders organization; players, coaches, and executives in the stands cried after that amazing last stand because Raiders owner, Al Davis, died the day before . Though a snapshot of the last play showed that Oakland only had 10 players on the field when a team usually has 11. It was amazing that the Raiders were able to shut down the Texans with one less player. Hue Jackson, Oakland Raiders head coach, did not even know of the mistake until after the game. This was a great, emotional win for Oakland and I believe the team is a contender in the NFL.

Renee
ESPN has been airing documentaries every Tuesday night at 8 PM and last week's documentary was on Steve Bartman's infamous fan interference in the Chicago Cubs playoff run which I blogged about last week, but this past documentary on October 4th was very interesting. It was about this man named Richard Raskind, who had felt trapped inside his body. Raskind was a very good amateur tennis player and a highly respected ophthalmologist (eye doctor), but having this was not enough for him. Raskind was a woman trapped in a man's body. Richard was not pleased with his appearance and started to under go hormone treatment and become a female. After the transformation was complete Richard, who changed his name to Renee Richards, up and left his family in New York and moved to live in seclusion in California.
Renee could not stay away from the tennis court after moving to California. With lack of better judgement she started to compete in amateur tennis matches in California. Word quickly spread around the country saying that Renee used to be a man. Tennis players began to drop out of tennis matches Renee competed in because they did not what to play against a transsexual. In 1976 Renee was banned access to the US Open that year by the United States Tennis Association. She took her ban to the US Supreme Court and it was overturned in 1976. This was the stepping stone for transsexual rights in any way. When Renee started to compete nationally she was in her 40's and did not win any titles, not because of her play but of her age.
Witnessing this emotional documentary made me realize that if one changes their sexuality and competes in a sport they should not be banned from that sport. The individual who goes through this transformation should be considered by their new sex not old. Everyone can learn from this documentary and become a better person from it.

Steelers 'taken back' by the Texans
Its not the start we were looking for Steeler fans. The Steelers are 2-2, with an embarrassing lost to the Houston Texans. On top of this lost Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, left the game with what appears to be a foot injury. Doctors believe it is a fractured foot, but will know more after the swelling goes down with a MRI. Another reason the Steelers are 2-2 is their defense and their offensive line. Last year the Steelers were first in the NFL in rush defense and are now 12th seeing what Arian Foster did to the defense on Sunday. Linebacker James Harrison said, "We played like garbage-period. We stink right now. We suck". With the offensive line the Steelers need to make some changes and possibly reach out to other players to come in and help the o-line. Hopefully, Mike Tomlin and the Steelers can bounce back and play better ball, before the season gets worse.

''Catching Hell", Steve Bartman's mistake
On Tuesday, ESPN aired a documentary about the 2003 NLCS Chicago Cubs vs. the Florida Marlins game. What made this game so interesting is Steve Bartman interfered with a foul ball left fielder Moises Alou clearly could have caught without the fan interference. Fans believe if Bartman did not interfere with that ball, the Cubs would have won game 6 and would have gone on to their first World Series since 1908. Most Cubs fans believe the organization is cursed because in the early 1900's the organization would not allow a man with his goat into the game. The man with the goat told the organization that he will put a curse on the club house and the Cubs will never win a championship again. Flash foward to 2003 the Cubs were on their way to winning a World Series if it was not for the Bartman incident. What is interesting after that fan interference play, the Cubs second baseman missed played a routine double play and allowed the Marlins to tie up the game. No fans blame the second baseman but looked to scape goat the loss on Bartman. Six fans went for that foul ball, but Bartman was the one that last touched the ball. After that play concluded, people began to throw beer and garbage in the stadium at Bartman. Also people began to chant "asshole" at Bartman. Bartman just took the critcism, staring blankly with his head phones on until he was escorted out. It was sad to see what happened to Bartman that fateful day in 2003. He was just a Cubs fan looking to see his favorite team make a historic run to the World Series. Steve Bartman's life will be forever changed.

Italian basketball team still eyeing Kobe
Kobe Bryant was offered a one year contract by the Italian basketball team, Virtus Bologna, worth $5 million. Seeing that the NBA is still on lock out, Vitrus hopes the Lakers star will agree to the deal before he arrives to Italy this week for a tour. Knowledge outside the organization said an unidentified company is providing for the deal. Kobe spent his youth in Italy when his father played overseas, and Bryant can also speak Italian. From all this, Bologna hopes Kobe will return to Italy for sentimental reasons.

Red Sox pitcher served 'papers'
Before the Red Sox played the Orioles Tuesday night, Red Sox pitcher Erik Bedard was served papers in a child support case. The Massachusetts Probate Court served Bedard the papers at Fenway Park at 3 PM before the game. To make matters worse the papers were served by lifelong Yankees fan, Tom Cabral, on behalf of Bedard's ex-girlfriend Courtney Roberts. The Red Sox/ Yankees rivalry dates back to the early 1900's when the Red Sox traded their then star, Babe Ruth, to the Yankees organization. The Red Sox organization was very cooperative with Cabral serving the papers the day Bedard started because that was the day Bedard's ex-girlfriend wanted the papers served. Right off the bat Cabral told Bedard he was a Yankee fan and did not want to start a problem and had to due this. Bedard shrugged it off and signed the papers. This was one of the final headaches for the Red Sox seeing the organization is 5-15 in September with Tampa Bay gaining the Red Sox in the AL Wild Card Race. Hopefully the "Bo Sox" can pull it together.

Vick's status uncertain due to concussion
Michael Vick's status for the Eagles is uncertain after the 35-31 loss to Atlanta last night. Vick was injured when he spun around and was hit into right tackle Todd Herremans. The Eagles athletic trainer stated that Vick is "very far along" with his concussion symptoms, but does not know when Vick will return. After sustaining the injury last night, Vick wanted to go back into the game but coaches would not allow him. Vick's back up quarterback Vince Young was also hurt and could not go in. This left Mike Kafka to play and had impressive last drive until Jeremy Maclin dropped a ball on 4th down and four.

Lebron James and Dwayne Wade taking "shots" towards each other via Twitter
Fans of Miami Heat and of Dwayne Wade and Lebron James can laugh at the teammates tweets that were sent back and forth to each other. The tweets were jokes toward James and Wade poking fun at various things about themselves. Luckily, they were only jokes not hateful tweets toward one another. The two teammates actually get along quite well and love to joke. For example, last NBA finals James and Wade were caught on camera coughing and saying they were sick, like there opponent Dirk Nowitzki. Though a mean joke Lebron and D-Wade love to have a little fun and blow off steam through there comments. James' tweet at D-Wade stated, "What do Ronald Mcdonald and Dwayne Wade have in common? They're both 6'2 and wear a 20 size shoe. I think this is very humorous and love to see athletes take friendly shots at one another.

Pitt star Dorin Dickerson signs with Pittsburgh Steelers 'practice squad'
Being from Imperial, PA and southwest Pennsylvania, Friday nights were dedicated to West Allegheny football. Attending West Allegheny football games, as a student, was very humbling because I got to see local sport stars, such as Tyler Palko and Dorin Dickerson. The first time I saw Dorin Dickerson I was in 8th grade and was amazed what this player could do as a senior in high school. Dorin played both sides of the ball and had amazing talent on both sides. Though at the University of Pittsburgh he had trouble finding his niche in the organization. Finally, as a tight end he caught 45 passes for 508 yards and 10 touchdowns and was an All-American. Dickerson was a 7th-round pick in 2010 to the Houston Texans, but was cut this past year. I am thankful to see this athlete return to southwest Pennsylvania and hopefully get to play for the Steelers. Hopefully he can play to the ability he did in high school and college.

Introduction
Hello! My name is Brian Crossley and this is the first time I have ever blogged before. I am starting to blog for my Sport Communication class as a way to network with other students in this class and possibly people in the Sport Management career field. I am a transfer sophomore from the University of Akron and I am a sport management major. I would like to graduate from SRU with a degree in Sport Management and start a career in athletic directing. I am 19 years old and from Imperial, PA and graduated from West Allegheny High School. In high school I ran cross country, winter track, and spring track. I hope everyone enjoys their fall semester here at Slippery Rock University!
