On Sunday, two time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died when his car got caught up in a 15-car pileup at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wheldon's car sailed over another vehicle and smashed into a catch fence during IndyCars season-ending race. Every race car driver goes into a race knowing that this could be their last but hope it will not be. Wheldon was driving from the back of the pack trying to make a move when he drove into the mess of cars weaving in every direction. He was unable to avoid the wreck in front of him and clipped another car, which sent his car airborne and burst into flames as he hit the fence. Drivers could only complete 11 laps of the race before it was over. Two hours later officials pronounced Wheldon dead. The driver was only 33. Officials were worried about aggressive driving in this race because of car speeds up to 225 m.p.h., 34 cars in the race, and a 200 lap course. Besides Wheldon, 3 others were hurt in the pileup. It is sad to see something like this to happen in any sport. Hopefully IndyCar will release the new, safer cars before the 2013 season. May Dan Wheldon rest in peace and may your thoughts and prayers be for the Wheldon family. He leaves behind a wife and two small children.
